A new budget of 6 Billion Euros has been mobilized by Prime Minister; Zapatero for R&D in Spain
August 2,2007

The Spanish Prime Minster, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, today announced his executive order for the creation of a "Leadership team to support investments in Catalonia" and also declared that this team will invest 500 million euros through 2010 for the extension of the Prat Airport in Barcelona.

The Spanish Prime Minster, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero & President of Catalonia, Jose Montilla.

In a press conference held in the Biomedical Investigation Park of Barcelona, the head of the center, accompanied by the minister of Industry, Joan Clos, called these investments in improving Catalonia infrastructures "powerful". Part of this budget includes investment in the TGV train that will arrive at Barcelona on December 21st, 2007 for the first time.

"The continuation of these investments are very important, the execution must be kept diligent and the planning for the future should be consistent", declared Zapatero who seemed very "proud" of Catalonia’s developments, its economic and industrial growth. He also mentioned that his Government has already mobilized 8 billion euros towards this community of which 6 billion will directly support R&D in this region.

In addition to the BIRD, Zapatero also stressed the budgetary resources on R&D and considered that investment in addition to advanced legislations in stem cells, all of which will place Spain in "a leadership position".

He also praised the activity of the Park of Investigation Biomedical of Barcelona, where he was visiting, accompanied by President of Catalonia, Jose Montilla. He called this center the reference center "in Europe and the world" which has brought back 1,000 researchers (two-thirds of the ones who left this country in the past decade) who had decided to leave Spain for the US and other parts of Europe to continue their research.
